Taishan Nuclear Power Introduction:

Established in July 2007, Taishan Nuclear Power Plant witnessed a significant milestone on November 26, 2007, with the signing of the “General Agreement on the Construction of Units 1 and 2 of Guangdong Taishan Nuclear Power Project,” the “Investment Agreement on Uranium Mines between China General Nuclear Group Corporation and Areva Group,” and the “Joint Venture Contract between China General Nuclear Group Corporation and Electricite de France for the Operation of Taishan Nuclear Power Company Limited.” These agreements, signed by Qian Zhimin, Chairman of China General Nuclear Group Corporation, alongside the then President of China, Hu Jintao, and the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, marked the beginning of a new era in third-generation nuclear power construction.

On September 7, 2019, the second EPR (Third Generation Pressurized Water Reactor) unit in the world commenced commercial operation.

Taishan Nuclear Power Company Limited is a Sino-foreign joint venture invested by China General Nuclear Group Corporation, Electricite de France, and Guangdong Energy Group. It is responsible for the financing, construction, operation, and management of the first phase of Taishan Nuclear Power Station, as well as bearing the ultimate responsibility for nuclear safety.

Located in Chixi Town, Taishan City, Guangdong Province, Taishan Nuclear Power Station plans to build six pressurized water reactor nuclear power units. The first phase of the project introduced the third-generation EPR (European Pressurized Reactor) technology, constructing two nuclear power units with a single-machine capacity of 1.75 million kilowatts each. After the completion of the first phase of Taishan Nuclear Power Station, it is estimated to reduce annual coal consumption by approximately 8.42 million tons and greenhouse gas emissions by over 22.7 million tons.

The first phase of Taishan Nuclear Power Project is the largest energy cooperation project between China and France in China. Taishan Nuclear Power Company Limited, jointly invested and established by China General Nuclear Group Corporation, Electricite de France (EDF), and Guangdong Energy Group, is responsible for construction and operation. Data indicates that after the completion of Units 1 and 2 at Taishan, it is expected to reduce annual coal consumption by about 8.03 million tons and greenhouse gas emissions by over 21.09 million tons annually, equivalent to afforesting 5,850 hectares of land.

The first phase of Taishan Nuclear Power Project adopts third-generation nuclear power technology (EPR) and constructs two nuclear power units with a single-machine capacity of 1.75 million kilowatts each. The EPR technology was jointly developed by EDF and Framatome, a subsidiary of EDF. This technology incorporates operational feedback and technological advancements accumulated from over 40 years of operation of pressurized water reactor nuclear power units worldwide, with more than 357 units in operation globally for over thousands of reactor years.
